Portion Control formed in south London in 1980, a trio of John Whybrew, Ian Sharp and Dean Piavani who had met at catering college; the name came from there. A run of cassette-only releases and compilation appearances led to the debut album I Staggered Mentally in 1982, first through In Phaze Records and then Illuminated from 1983.
They call what they do hard rhythmic electronics, and they were early to sampling. Skinny Puppy, Front Line Assembly and Depeche Mode all took something from them. The first incarnation ran until 1987, followed by a spell as Solar Enemy, and the group returned in 2002.
