Clock DVA was formed in Sheffield in 1978 by Adi Newton and Steven “Judd” Turner, the name lifted from the Nadsat of Anthony Burgess’s A Clockwork Orange. Newton had already worked with members of Cabaret Voltaire, and with Ian Craig Marsh and Martyn Ware in The Future. The first lineup added David J. Hammond on guitar, Roger Quail on drums and Charlie Collins on saxophone and clarinet.
The debut cassette White Souls in Black Suits came out on Throbbing Gristle’s Industrial Records in 1980, followed by Thirst on Fetish in 1981 and Advantage in 1983. Buried Dreams (1989) and Man-Amplified (1992) pushed the group towards the harder electronic end it is best known for. Noesis followed in 2023.
