Clair Obscur is a French post-punk and cold wave band founded in 1981 in Creil by Thierry Damerval, Christophe Demarthe, and Nicolas Demarthe. Among French cold wave and industrial acts of the 1980s, they achieved some of the widest international recognition, releasing records on UK labels All the Madmen and Cathexis and appearing on the N.E.R. compilation From Torture to Conscience (1984) alongside Current 93 and Death In June.
Their music spans tribal cold wave, chamber music, and performance art. Key releases include In Out (1988) and Rock (1994). The band reactivated in 2004.
