About

The Band of Holy Joy is an English group formed in 1984 in New Cross, South London, by Johny Brown. Their early sound revolved around junk-shop instrumentation and rudimentary electronics, drawing on influences from Jacques Brel, Bertolt Brecht, and European cabaret. After self-issued cassettes, they signed to Flim Flam, then Rough Trade, releasing Manic, Magic, Majestic (1989) and Positively Spooked (1990).

The band dissolved in 1993 but reformed in 2002. Since 2017, they have released a steady stream of albums including Neon Primitives and Scorched Jerusalem (2025).
